Fans of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower novels is finally getting a movie and production is currently ongoing. With a premiere set for 2017, The Dark Tower movie has Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey leading the ensemble cast.

As told by Geek, Idris Elba will be playing Roland Deschain, a.k.a the Gunslinger, Matthew McConaughey will be playing Walter, a.k.a The Man in Black, and Tom Taylor will be playing Jake Chambers. The three characters will be forming the core of the first movie.

In the books, Roland Deschain is the last gunslinger of the Mid-World. He is also on a mission to save his deteriorating world by going to the tower that stands at the nexus point in time and space, as told by Cheat Sheet.

The Man in Black is the Gunslinger’s nemesis who goes by many names. He is an ageless sorcerer who also tries to get to the tower in order to take control of the many kingdoms it looks over.

Jake Chambers is the young boy whom Roland needs to complete his quest and throughout the journey, ends up being like a son to him.

As for the movie’s plot, it is a combination of elements from all the books. Director Nikolaj Arcel states that The Dark Tower movie is somewhat more of a sequel to the books. However, there will be little tweaks in terms of the characters for the movie version. Among those tweaks will be of Jake having psychic abilities and being able to see into other worlds.

Production has already started in April 2016 and stars Abbey Lee, Jackie Earle Haley, Franz Kranz, Michael Barbierri and Katheryn Winnick.

The film’s screenplay is written by Arcel, Akiva Goldman, Jeff Pinkner and Anders Thomas Jensen. Ron Howard is also on board as the film’s producer.

The Dark Tower movie is expected to premiere on February 17, 2017.
