‘SpongeBob Squarepants’ Officially Canceled? Viral Image Causes Panic

One of the longest running and most successful children’s shows is rumored to come to an end as a viral image is circulating around the internet about SpongeBob Squarepants getting canceled.

According to snopes.com, the viral image is of SpongeBob himself with the words “After 17 years on TV SpongeBob Squarepants is officially being canceled on October 17th, 2016.” A show’s cancellation can hit hard for many people, especially if the show has so many fans all over the country and the world. Nevertheless the news spread like wildfire all over the internet, with people expressing their sadness and disappointment at the show’s cancelation.

While many were saddened, some were skeptical and even wondered if the news was ever true. Memes of SpongeBob Squarepants getting canceled also went around, making a lot of buzz without any proof to back the claim up.

Fortunately, a Nickelodeon representative cleared up the rumors going around and proved it to be false. “No, the show isn’t cancelled,” the representative replied.

It is not the first time false news of SpongeBob Squarepants getting canceled appeared all over the internet. In 2013, a similar hoax where a fan-made photo went around saying that the show would be canceled on Jan. 28, 2014 according to WafflesAtNoon. Even Tom Kenny, who voices everyone’s favorite sponge was also subject to similar hoaxes.

Still, many will be relieved to know that the show is not going away any time soon. With many people all over the world having grown up watching SpongeBob and the rest of the gang from Bikini Bottom, it would be very hard to say goodbye when the time comes.

SpongeBob Squarepants has recently been nominated in the Emmys for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program. It was previously nominated for a Primetime Emmy a total of nine times and has won a total of 42 awards since it first aired on Nickelodeon in 1999.
