‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ Villain: Javier Bardem is Captain Salazar

The first trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales has been released and it gives everyone a glance at the movie’s newest villain: Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem.

As the trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean 5 suggests, the villainous Captain Salazar has a score to settle with Captain Jack Sparrow. With an army of pirate ghosts behind him, the film will center on what Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow has done to Captain Salazar in the past.

So, just who is this Captain Salazar? Is he even real? Well, there is no real pirate named Captain Salazar, but the original name of the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 villain was supposedly Captain Brand, after a real pirate by the same name who was killed while burying some treasure. It is likely that the producers changed the name to Salazar to better suit Bardem’s heritage. The real Salazar in pirate history possibly refers to Gonzalo de Salazar, a Spanish aristocrat.

To add to that, before Bardem ultimately landed the role, fellow Bond villain Christoph Waltz expressed interest in the Captain Brand role. If Captain Brand was the original name, perhaps his story will be the one played out on screen.

Other plot details involve Captain Salazar and his crew of pirate ghosts getting out of the Devil’s Triangle. Upon realizing freedom, they are determined to take out every living pirate in the world, and it seems like Captain Salazar has his eyes set on Captain Jack Sparrow first.

Production wrapped up in July 2015 but reshoots were made earlier in April this year. Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning are at the helm as directors with the script written by Jeff Nathanson.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales premieres on May 26, 2017. It also stars Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Adam Brown, Delroy Atkinson and Danny Kirrane. Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, Kevin McNally, Martin Klebba, Stephen Graham, Giles New, Angus Barnett and Keith Richards are confirmed to reprise their roles.
