As production on the Marvel flick Avengers: Infinity War commences in a matter of weeks, the cast and plot are shaping up in ways unimagined before. The latest addition: Doctor Strange actor Benedict Wong.
It looks like the defenders of the universe will be up against a very powerful supervillain. Hence, the heroes in the Marvel cinematic universe will need the help of supporting characters who wield magic. Into that mold fall Doctor Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch; and the Kamar-Taj master, played by Wong.
Marvel has tweaked the character played by Wong from a sidekick to a skilled and scholarly teacher with a thorough understanding of the mystic arts. Wong was trained in a remote monastery to be adept in serving a master sorcerer. After being abducted by other dimensional sorcerers and being rescued by Doctor Strange, he commits to serving a mystic devoted to good.
Wong will be joining a huge cast of characters with a common goal – to defeat Thanos. Interestingly, since Doctor Strange, along with other super characters like Iron Man, may be teaming up as part of the comic book entity called the Illuminati, the Kamar-Taj master will be pulled in to do his part.
Wong, 45, is no newcomer in the Hollywood film industry. The British actor with Asian looks appeared in Prometheus, The Martian and also in Netflix’s Marco Polo as Kublai Khan. From playing Doctor Strange’s loyal servant, he is now ready to cross over to another major Marvel flick, Avengers: Infinity War.
He was elated to be included in the A-list cast of Avengers: Infinity War. As a more complex storyline unravels and as the plot thickens, diverse characters need to come into the fold. Wong stated that he is simply “thrilled” to be onboarded, and to play a significant role at that, in the highly anticipated film.
