As the premiere of Episode 8 is still a long way away, everyone is excited as to what the new sequel will be showing. Spoilers for Star Wars: Episode 8 clear up the issue of Rey being a “Mary Sue” figure and reveal the return of a very familiar kind of stormtrooper.
Previous spoilers for Star Wars: Episode 8 revealed that big things are going to happen to Rey in the movie. While some were pleased with her introduction in The Force Awakens, others were not impressed and even labeled her as a “Mary Sue” kind of character. This was possibly due to the scenes where she suddenly possesses the Force out of nowhere in very risky situations. Actress Daisy Ridley is very much aware of these claims made by fans and said that she does not quite understand why such claims are made.
A “Mary Sue” is a term to describe characters who are too perfect and suddenly experience a growth in character to become the heroine that they supposedly are. Often, Mary Sues are referred to female characters; thus the name. When it comes to fan fiction, the Mary Sue is more of a self-insert to fulfill the reader’s wishes.
Ridley stated her opinion on this issue, saying that the term in itself is very sexist because it is a name of a woman. Ridley continued to say that Rey is a very vulnerable woman and she is only doing what she thinks is right, and not exactly for the greater good.
More spoilers for Star Wars: Episode 8 indicate that the Empire stormtroopers seen in the original trilogy will be making a return. Compared to The Force Awakens, the stormtroopers under The First Order were more modernized to suit the tone. Now, fans can look forward to see the red Imperial Guards and Imperial Gunners back in action and marching around for Episode 8.
That is not all, as it is said that there will be a newer kind of stormtrooper that will most likely go head to head with Finn called the Executioner.
Star Wars: Episode 8 is scheduled to premiere on December 15, 2017.
