For the Father of Deep Learning, AI Robots Will Explore The Galaxy on Their Own by 2050

In over three decades, artificial intelligence will be independent enough to be driven by their own curiosity to explore the abyss of space without humans playing a role in it, according to the Father of Deep Learning.

During WIRED2016, an annual conference on explorations and innovations, Jurgen Schmidhuber, who is considered as the father of deep learning, said some predictions on the most likely path AI will go in the next few years.

Computer scientist Schmidhuber earned the recognition for pioneering the deep learning neural networks. Most AI systems used today, including the ones in smartphones, are founded by him as well. Therefore, his words are definitely worth taking note.

Colonization of Galaxy by AI

Schmidhuber says AI will do more than just taking over jobs from us humans. In fact, they will soon be independent enough to have curiosity as their drive and space-exploration is upon their midst.

By 2050, trillions of “self-replicating robot factories on the asteroid belt” will be present, according to Schmidhuber. And after a million years, the artificial intelligence will “colonize the galaxy.”

Since space mining is already being tapped nowadays, the future AIs will easily be scientists tasked with gathering resources from space. Moreover, they can, and will, explore the galaxy out of their own curiosity and goals.

Humans, meanwhile, will not “play a big role” to that, says Schmidhuber, but “that’s okay.”

While these might be too astonishing to handle, the advancement of AI is indeed taking huge leaps.

A Toronto-based startup already has a patent application for an exoskeleton robot that can mimic, and eventually learn, the actions of humans. In time, they can do things on their own and transfer the data to other robots to do the task autonomously.

Speech, image recognition, and learning are not that far off for AIs anymore, thanks to deep neural networks which are devised to stimulate our brain’s neural connections.

Schmidhuber said evolution took millions of years “to get to human intelligence” and computers are way-way faster. Thus, the future of artificial intelligence, indeed, looks not so distant anymore.
