T’Challa has a lot of enemies just as much as he has a lot of allies. Winston Duke is joining the cast of the Black Panther solo movie to play a villain.
As told by Variety, newcomer Winston Duke will be playing the villain M’Baku a.k.a Man-Ape in the movie. Duke is known for starring in the TV series Person of Interest. Duke has also previously appeared in shows such as Major Crimes and The Messengers. Black Panther will be Winston Duke’s feature film debut as well as his introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II of The Get Down was previously considered for the role among many other actors.
In the comics, M’Baku is one of Wakanda’s best warriors and is one of T’Challa’s biggest rivals. M’Baku is an integral character during T’Challa’s first reign as king of Wakanda and also questions his leadership that results in animosity between the two, according to Screen Rant. While details of how big a role M’Baku will be playing in the story are unknown, it is likely that he will form an alliance with fellow villain Kilmonger in order to overthrow T’Challa.
Chadwick Boseman leads the cast as T’Challa/Black Panther, the Wakandan prince and warrior who becomes king after his father’s murder. Boseman previously made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War, with his portrayal of T’Challa/Black Panther garnering a lot of positive reactions from both critics and the public.
The Black Panther cast also includes Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o. Andy Serkis is rumored to be reprising his role as Ulysses Klaue from Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Ryan Coogler is at the helm to direct and is co-writing the script with Joe Robert Cole. Production is expected to start in January 2017.
The Black Panther movie is expected to premiere on Feb. 16, 2018.
