Supposedly, The Croods 2 is set for release on Dec. 22, 2017. However, DreamWorks Animation is sold to NBCUniversal which makes the movie under the Universal fold. In effect, some release dates of movies under their wing are moved, according to Deadline.
Fox will be keeping the release date though and put The Story of Ferdinand in the slot. The movie, based from the classic 1936 children’s book Ferdinand, is also delayed, having a July 21, 2017 original release date.
As of now, three DreamWorks Animation movies are still officially set for release – Trolls on Nov. 4, 2016, Boss Baby on March 31, 2017 and Captain Underpants on June 2, 2017.
The first movie, The Croods (2013), was a blockbuster success garnering over $587 million from a budget of $135 million.
The story was set in a prehistoric era and revolves around the cave family called Croods and their traveling adventure after their cave was destroyed.
The plot revolves around the lives of the family consisting of Grug (Nicolas Cage), the overprotective and old-fashioned patriarch of the family, and his wife Ugga (Catherine Keener). With them are their three children: the rebellious cavegirl Eep (Emma Stone), the not-so-bright but has-a-good-heart Thunk (Clark Duke) and the ferocious baby Sandy (Randy Thom). Ugga’s mother, Gran (Cloris Leachman), also tags along in the journey.
Later, they meet the inventive guy named Guy (Ryan Reynolds) and his pet sloth Belt (Chris Sanders).
Kat Dennings and Leslie Mann are joining the voice cast for The Croods 2 in 2018 according to Variety.
Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders will be back to direct the sequel. With the Hageman brothers now on board, the sequel promises a whole new and exciting adventures.
The Hageman brothers are known for their writing background in co-writing Hotel Transylvania, Ninja LEGO movie, and Netflix’s Trollhunters. They had also worked with the acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro for CBS Films’ Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
