Every now and then a story comes to remind us to be more careful in what we say, especially in the internet age. One such case is that of Weather Channel anchor Jennifer Delgado. While covering the damage wrought by Hurricane Matthew, the reporter offhandedly commented that the living conditions in Haiti are too harsh that the children there actually end up “eating trees” to survive.
The comments were said when the channel was doing a sort of damage assessment or after-report on the calamity. It all started out as a typical weather report. However, when on-screen graphics depicted a portion of Haiti to be deforested, Weather Channel anchor Jennifer Delgado went on about her opinions on how the situation came to be.
“They take all the trees down. They burn the trees. Even the kids there, they’re so hungry they actually eat the trees!” Delgado went on. Needless to say, the unnecessary comments led to a lot of raised eyebrows. Some were surprised, and a lot were outraged. Besides the comments being inaccurate, they were borderline offensive to many people.
The concerned channel expressed regret with regards to the anchorwoman’s statements. They assured the people that Delgado “did not intend to offend the Haitian community” and that she merely “misspoke.” They promised that in their continued efforts to cover the events concerning Hurricane Matthew, they would focus on the impacts of the storm.
Weather Channel anchor Jennifer Delgado apologized on social media herself. In her Facebook post pertaining to the issue, she admitted that the statements she made were inappropriate. She said that she merely wanted to emphasize how difficult the situation in Haiti can be, especially after such a major calamity.
But as it stands, it seems that the internet wants more than just an apology for the offhand statements. An online petition for the firing of Delgado from the Weather Channel has been posted online. The petition has amassed a little over 20,000 signatures as of the time of writing.
