Johnny Depp, Amber Heard Divorce Controversy Creates Profound Impact On Fans’ Perceptions About Them

Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, news of abuse
Johnny Depp is shown at a film festival premiere premiere of `The Rum Diary’ where he co-starred with his estranged wife Amber Heard. Their divorce settlement news allegedly involving spousal abuse cast the actor in a negative light.

Many babyboomers and Gen-X movie buffs loved Johnny Depp in the 2005 Tim Burton musical fantasy film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, while more recent generations recall him in the Pirates of the Caribbean flicks. He had hits and misses, yet he remained a revered Hollywood actor. Sadly, news of the Amber Heard “abuse” changed how certain quarters perceived him.

Now that it was announced that he is joining the cast of the sequel to the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, those people who sympathized with Depp’s ex-wife have come out of the woodwork to slam the decision. The earlier announcement of Amber as Atlantean Queen Mera in Justice League likewise created some uproar. An online follower tweeted that she was “perfection” nonetheless.

The Johnny Depp-Amber Heard divorce settlement resulted to $7 million spousal support to the Justice League actress, which she donated to two of her favorite charitable institutions. Americans who witnessed the divorce controversy had been divided into two camps – loyal  fans of Depp despised Heard and called her a gold digger; while those who believed the news and charges of spousal abuse hated Depp.

With the recent casting news for The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel, many Harry Potter fans have made their voices heard online. Depp’s slew of bad publicity on spousal abuse have been countered by his children and ex-partner Vanessa Paradis, yet the backlash against him had been intense.

The Harry Potter Alliance, for instance, tweeted that it stands by Amber Heard and all survivors of abuse, and also urged those responsible for the casting decision of Depp in the Fantastic Beasts sequel to “hear & act on the concerns of fans & survivors.”

There were Johnny Depp fans who came to his defense, of course.  They welcomed the news of the Alice Through the Looking Glass actor as a fitting choice for one of the main cast members of the sequel to J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Word went around that Depp may play the role of Gellert Grindelwal, one of the most dangerous Dark Wizards in the Harry Potter Universe, whom Albus Dumbledore will fall in love with.
