Fake news is not new to social media users; but during election, hoaxes have spread rampantly and gained negative attention for allegedly affecting election results. In response, Facebook and Google have taken action against fake news sites proliferating on social media.
Many of us have stumbled upon fake news while browsing online or scrolling through our feeds. And most of us may have fallen for it too – clicking on the link, sharing it, and even spreading the news through word of mouth without knowing that it is all just a hoax.
During the U.S. election, Google, Facebook and even Twitter received backlashes for allegedly allowing fake news to spread like wildfire. Many have claimed that permitting the spread of malicious content and wrong information have affected the voters to get swayed towards the Republican candidate, now President-elect, Donald Trump.
With that, Facebook and Google have decided to take action by updating their policies.
Facebook spells out in their advertising policies that banning of misleading and deceitful content includes fake news. Google will also bar websites with fake news from using their AdSense advertising network.
Facebook released a statement that they “do not integrate or display ads in apps or sites” that include “illegal, misleading, or deceptive” content which includes “fake news.” Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s co-founder and chief executive, insists that the fake news “surely had no impact” on the decisions of the voters.
In a statement by Google, they also said that they will “restrict ad serving” on pages or websites that “misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information about the publisher, the publisher’s content, or the primary purpose of the web property.”
Both Facebook and Google’s first steps in taking action against fake news focuses on updating their ad policies and not on targeting the fake news proliferating on users’ feeds or checking the accuracy of the articles.
The process of implementation of the change in policy is not yet revealed.
