Giving Tuesday 2016 is upon us. What better way to celebrate the holidays than share what you have, whether that is through donations, your time or your voice, to others. Here are ideas on how to get involved effectively.
As Thanksgiving is over, we not only observe the biggest shopping events of the year for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It also marks the start of Giving Tuesday 2016, the global day of giving, sharing and helping others.
GIVING TUESDAY 2016: TIPS ON JOINING THE MOVEMENT
In order to make an impact with choosing the nonprofit organization where you want to give your help, Forbes spoke to West Coast lead Nick Tedesco of J.P. Morgan Private Bank’s Philanthropy Centre. Here are must-knows and tips to keep in mind:
1. IDENTIFY YOUR MOTIVATIONS
First of all, you should know your motivations for giving, according to Tedesco. Jot down ideas of what you value and stand for. From there, you can figure out the means and results you can look forward to. That will also guide you on which nonprofit organization you can choose out of more than 1.5 million organizations in the world.
2. ON CHOOSING A NONPROFIT
Know which organization for Giving Tuesday 2016 fits with what you believe in. Supporting nonprofits is not a one-time thing thus you have to make sure you stand by the values and goals of the organization that you are participating in.
You have to get to know them and the people they are serving for. If you want, you can also make sure to know whether the nonprofit is sustainable or not to see if they are spending their money well.
3. HOW TO MAKE AN IMPACT
Figure out the success you want to achieve out of what you give for Giving Tuesday 2016 not only for you but also for your organization. Be realistic as well with your expectations.
To make the most impact, know that helping does not stop with handling financial support. Help as much as you can and stay involved.
4. SHOULD YOU HAVE A SAY ON WHERE YOUR DONATIONS GO?
Tedesco says that “unrestricted funding” is necessary to let the nonprofit organization you are supporting meet their goals. Thus, as mentioned earlier, knowing which organization meets with what you believe in comes important.
However, if you feel especially compassionate to a specific program of the organization, you can voice your interest to the organization about it.
5. IDEAS FOR TAKING PART
There are a lot of ways for joining the movement aside from giving donations. You can also give your time and your voice to be of help in any way you can. The power of your voice can let others know who might be interested and able to support the organization. Thus, just because you cannot donate does not mean you cannot participate.
With little steps through Giving Tuesday 2016, together we can make a huge leap towards the better and brighter tomorrow.
