Park Bom’s ‘Drug Scandal’ Not the Reason Why 2NE1 Disbanded

2NE1, 2NE1 disbands

Fans saw it coming. Yet it was not until the official announcement of 2NE1’s disbandment was made did the sad reality sink into the consciousness of millions of fans worldwide.

The talented members of the all-female Korean pop singing group were involved in solo projects even before one member left the group. The singing group consisted of CL, Dara, Bom, and Minzy. They gained a huge following since the debut of their first single Fire was released in May 2009.

Talent Management group YG Entertainment had earlier announced the inking of the contracts of  CL and Dara as solo artists, along with the news that they will not manage Park Bom anymore.

2NE1 Members Map Out Solo Careers

The foursome was reduced to three when Minzy officially left the group in April 2016. Minzy wrote on her Instagram account a few months ago that she was grateful for all the wonderful memories she and the other 2NE1 members have shared with fans across the world.

The Korean pop singing group churned out Billboard music chart toppers. In 2014, 2NE1 held the highest ranking K-pop album on the Billboard 200 for two years, when Crush came out at No. 61. The group’s 2010 album To Anyone became their first album to appear on the World Album chart, debuting at No. 7.

The disbandment of 2NE1 brings to mind the English-Irish pop boy band One Direction that had one member, Zayn Malik, bolting. Today, he has successfully charted a solo career. Zayn had confessed that there was “never any room” for him to experiment creatively while with the band. Even when Zayn left One Direction, Niall, Harry, Liam and Louis continued as a four-piece group until they eventually went on hiatus.

In 2NE1’s case, Park Bom had to go on indefinite leave following an investigation of the “drug scandal” that broke out in 2014. So does Park Bom’s perceived “drug scandal” have something to do with the disbandment?

According to reports, it was not the main reason. But rather, Minzy’s departure might have something to do with it.

“As of May 2016, 2NE1’s exclusive contract with YG was over and seeing as Minzy was longer able to continue with the group, YG, along with the members, have decided to officially disband 2NE1 after many discussions,” YG Entertainment said in a statement.

2NE1 Member Shows Positivity

Sandara Park posted a quote on her Instagram account a few days ago about how every ending marks a “new beginning” and wrote, “Think positive and positive things will happen.”

Dara’s post generated thousands of likes and messages of appreciation and encouragement. The pop singing sensation 2NE1, as conveyed by many fans through social media, will be sorely missed. Some fans surmised that some of the group’s members may return, though not anytime soon and definitely not under YG.
