Running Man is officially saying goodbye. The announcement comes after the very controversial events that unfolded when members Song Ji Hyo and Kim Jong Kook were kicked out of the series that pushed fans to show their outcry to the program.
The hit South Korean variety program’s producers initially claimed that as the show will have some changes in style and format following the declining ratings, members Song Ji Hyo and Kim Jong Kook allegedly decided to leave the show, quite emphasizing their own will to do so, in order to focus on their own careers.
Song Ji Hyo and Kim Jong Kook Let Go
However, it was revealed that they were actually let go from the program. While the cast is aware of the changes, they had no idea that some of the members will be leaving. Moreover, Kim Jong Kook and Song Ji Hyo were left blindsided about their leaving the show.
Commander Kim Jong Kook, also known as Tiger in the show, was told of “leaving the show one-sidedly” just two days before the news broke out. Meanwhile, Ace Song Ji Hyo, or MongJi (Blank Ji Hyo), only knew through the news that she “would not be invited back” to be part of Running Man Season 2.
Upon hearing about it, loyal fans took to social media their dismay and anger at the show and the network, SBS, for treating the cast in such way who have been in the show for already seven years.
Following the people’s uproar, SBS issued a statement asking for apology “for nor being more thoughtful and considerate” to Song Ji Hyo, Kim Jong Kook, and the rest of the cast, staff and crew of the variety program who are all hurt by the turn of events.
Running Man Bids Goodbye
The whirlwind of events led the show to, once and for all, just say goodbye. Low ratings called for the changes that the production team is planning. However, the backlash they received from fans shows the program can no longer be salvaged – especially when the two of the original members were let go in such horrendous manner without even being told beforehand.
The news came up that the remaining original cast of RM met secretly to decide to quit the show altogether. It led to suggestions that RM Season 2 might no longer happen.
Later, SBS confirmed that the members and producers of RM had an emergency meeting to discuss the recent “misunderstandings and miscommunications.” With a “deep and lengthy discussion both sides,” everyone agreed for the show to finally hit its end in February 2017. The seven-year running program will finally turn its last page and plans for Season 2 are definitely trashed.
It is also confirmed that Song Ji Hyo and Kim Jong Kook will join Running Man until its finale, along with the other members HaHa, Ji Suk Jin, Lee Kwang Soo and Yoo Jae Suk.
