In the advent of online journalism, through the years it became harder and harder to weed out “real journalism” from the rest of the cookie-cutter mold. Recently, there has been a crackdown of bringing down websites that offer “fake news,” and some entities, like the Knight Foundation, are doing more than just fight. They actually go out of their way to recognize those who contribute value to online journalism by giving out grants.
The Foundation recently launched “Knight News Match,” a program that aims to give out matching grants specifically to nonprofit news organizations. They have set up $1.5 million in funds, and they encourage people to donate to 57 news organizations eligible for the grant.
The Advantage of Knight Foundation Matching Grants
This is particularly generous considering how matching grants work. Basically, nonprofit news organizations should see the Foundation grant as a challenge. They do not get the money outright, but are required to raise money up to a certain goal, in this case up to $1.5 million.
When the nonprofit news organization meets the money expectations through fundraising, the Foundation will “match” what they have raised, effectively doubling what they receive. If the nonprofit raised $1.5 million on their own, the Foundation will grant them a matching $1.5 million, bringing the total of their raised fund to $3 million.
As of the time of writing, there are 57 nonprofit news organizations eligible for the matching grants, including CALmatters, Center for Collaborative Journalism, Maryland Reporter, and The Connecticut Mirror.
Crackdown on Fake News
Recently, fake news had become so rampant that media giants Facebook and Google were forced to take measures to minimize the impact of fake news in our daily browsing. One of the strongest suits Facebook and Google played is to take all lucrative advertising privileges away from suspected peddlers of fake news.
