Tom Hiddleston won Best Actor in Golden Globes. But as he was delivering his acceptance speech, the message he conveyed made the internet cringe which he later on realized and addressed on social media with an apology.
What Went Down
The British actor received the award for Best Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries in Golden Globes 2017 for his lead role on AMC’s The Night Manager. All is well as he took the stage to deliver his acceptance speech.
Tom then talked about how his work in South Sudan, from his interactions with the people to his experience in the country. However, it became awkward for the viewers as he pointed out how he had given solace to the war-torn country with his crime drama.
His speech ended sounding like a humble-brag and an ad for his show. Of course, the cringe-worthy moment did not pass the scrutinizing senses of the folks on Twitter.
Many tweeted their two cents on what happened with Tom’s acceptance speech, with some even managing to make a Taylor Swift joke out of it. One user tweeted, “No wonder TSwift ended things.
Tom Clears The Air
After some reflection, Tom must have realized how awkward his speech sounded, especially after the internet backlash.
The Thor actor wrote on his Facebook profile that he does “completely agree” that his acceptance speech in Golden Globes was “inelegantly expressed.” He admits that he was just “very nervous” which led for his words to come out wrong.
Tom then made it clear that his sincere intention was only to “salute the incredible bravery and courage of the men and women who work so tirelessly for UNICEF UK, Doctors Without Borders/ Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), and World Food Programme, and the children of South Sudan.”
Without “the nerves” getting the best of him, Tom was finally able to state clearly what he really means. And Tom Hiddleston makes it crystal clear that his heart is in the right place even though his choice of words during his speech was not that nice.
